the party

~Pricsilla~(February 23 79AD):

So, today was the day we'd be going to the ball. It was held at night. So, I chose the prettiest of all the dresses I had, to wear. I wore a long white tunic over which a green stola (a free flowing garment worn over the tunic.) covered. Over that, I wore a peacock blue piece of fabric (like a shawl) with a fold for head covering (Augustus helped me with that). Even if it was the prettiest, it would never match the prom dresses of modern times ಠ ೧ ಠ...

Augustus said I looked pretty. That meant I really didn't (his tastes are always bad). But I didn't have any better choice other than this. I used some ash mixed with a little oil for the mascara (don't try this at home... A little of it got into my eyes and irritated the hell out of me!!)

And I used some wild beetroot juice as lipstick. Wait... I had a makeup kit right in my bag!! Why the hell did I waste so much time!!

"Girls sure take a lot of time to dress up.", He chided.

"STFU!"

"Es tea eff you?"

"Ohh nothing!! Really!!"

He doesn't get it. How will he get it!! It's better that way... I can curse him all I want!!

He wore some casual clothes... Description?? Well he wore a sleeveless tunic with a woollen toga draped over. It looked a little bit like a plain white gown worn for funerals... He also wore the wig (black one) and I used my foundation and highlighters to change his complection a little.

And off we set, for the ball (note: I translated the word "covivium" in Latin which meant "party" to "ball" so you can understand better.)

I am sure you expected me to say I danced happily with some handsome guy?? NO!! I never danced!! They never danced either! We merely sat on the table, drank and ate. There was music. But a very slow and boring one. I didn't enjoy the party at all.

They spoke about the amount of wealth and slaves they had. Someone asked us about it too!! And Augustus, who went by the name Flavius, like an idiot, said he had a good warrior slave who could defeat any other warriors!! Can you believe my luck to end up with such an idiot!!

He should have left it at that. But No, he didn't! He invited one of the rich men to our house for a visit!!

"Oh that's so sweet Flavius!! I would indeed like to see your warrior slave!! And that slave with red hair might have cost you a lot!", The rich noble guy who was invited said.

"No I am his wife!", I almost yelled at him. I was angry, first because Augustus made my identity as his wife when I insisted on being his sister, second because he invited some rich guy to our rag house, for which he lied saying "It is a biiiiig bungalow!!" which was utter bullshit.

"Ohhoo! Sorry miss!", He said, with a little disappointed tone.

"What the hell!! My house is soo small!! And you are exaggerating stuff!", I whispered into Augy's ear ( "Augustus" is a big word. So let's stick with Augy).

"So we'll meet at the big famous banyan tree? I don't keep my slaves in my house-", He told the rich guy.

"Oh I am fine with that!! As long as I get to meet that gladiator of yours...", Noble guy jumped with excitement.

"Where will we get slaves?", I nagged him.

"We'll just buy one. Some are sold at cheap prices..."

"What about the "warrior" slave??"

"Let's see... I don't know... But look he's rich!! He'll bring a lot of gifts of great value!! Think about that!!"

"But when he comes and discovers that we are nothing but fake, what will happen? Please think about that too!"

"Don't worry! I am rich. So I know how to act all high and mighty!"

"Fine! But having slaves is wrong! All men are equal! Even women by the way.."

"Huh nonsense!"

Then I realized talking to ancient men that too Roman nobles, about equality and rights, it's useless...
