Unique Reasons for Choosing a Major

The three of them were in a good mood after lunch and headed to the school's supermarket to buy some daily supplies.

"Lin Zhu, it sounds like you know a lot about our school."

Sun Xiaodong curiously asked Lin Zhu on their way back. "Since our school believes that the university is a society, how can newcomers like us survive in this school?"

Lin Zhu pushed up his black-framed glasses. "Just like when you're part of the society, if you can't deal with the trouble, then avoid making any. If you can't avoid it, then you can either surrender or just look for someone powerful to support you and help you out."

Sun Xiaodong sighed as he wondered, "Then who are those that are considered powerful?"

Lin Zhu pursed his lips and answered, "There are many kinds of people in the world. Some rely on their fists, some rely on money, and some rely on their families; everyone has their own ways. As I said, there's no difference between this place and the actual society."

"Don't think too much about it for now. If you just want to study, then keep your head down and don't get into any trouble. If you are not competitive and you don't stir up any trouble, no one would bully you."

Qin Yang heard Lin Zhu's answer and chuckled, "That's just exactly how the society works."

Lin Zhu nodded. "Yes, it is. The elites in Zhonghai University are not simple personnel. Once they step into the society in the future, they're pretty much the best of the best."

Lin Zhu paused for a bit before smiling and continued, "I'm a techie. I need a quiet place to focus on my studies. I've never thought of being better than anyone else. I think I'll be moving out and renting an apartment later."

Qin Yang was surprised that Lin Zhu was also planning to move out.

"You said you're a techie. What's your specialization?"

"Programming. I've liked it since I was a kid."

Sun Xiaodong asked in surprise, "Then why did you apply for an English major instead of a computer major?"

Lin Zhu replied calmly, "I've already finished the university's computer courses. If I apply for a computer major, then that would be a waste of time. It's better for me to learn English so I can communicate with foreign counterparts. I'd love to read some foreign books."

Sun Xiaodong suddenly laughed and asked, "So you're studying a foreign language just to get better at computer programming?"

Lin Zhu nodded. "Yes!"

Sun Xiaodong chuckled and said, "You might be able to save the nation indirectly."

Lin Zhu asked, "What about you? Why did you sign up for an English major?"

Sun Xiaodong scratched his head helplessly and said, "I think English is relatively easy to learn. I can make a living by just talking and I don't have to use that much brainpower. So I chose English in order to become a professional translator in the future..."

Both Qin Yang and Lin Zhu looked at Sun Xiaodong's tall and sturdy figure and could not help but wonder at the same time: did he look so strong because he didn't like to use his brain?

Sun Xiaodong noticed the two of them looking at his body in a peculiar way and could roughly guess what they were thinking but he didn't mind it as he easily explained, "I just don't want to think about a lot of things. That's why I like to exercise and learn simple stuff. Anyway, I will still be able to feed myself with my profession... Qin Yang, how about you? Why did you choose English?"

Qin Yang touched his nose and said awkwardly, "My elders made the decision for me, I had no choice."

Sun Xiaodong and Lin Zhu turned to look at Qin Yang with sympathy. Sun Xiaodong comforted him and said, "The English department is a good choice anyway. Nowadays, even if people don't know much in their respective fields, they will still be offered a position if they know how to speak English. It's easier to find a job."

Qin Yang chuckled, "Yeah? That's not bad."

Lin Zhu smiled and said, "There's also another advantage of being in the English department."

Sun Xiaodong inquired curiously, "What's that?"

Lin Zhu smiled as he said, "There are a lot of girls in the English department. I just found out that there are 42 students in our class and there are only 11 boys. In other words, we have 31 girls in our class. The male to female ratio is almost one to three..."

Sun Xiaodong's eyes turned bright all of a sudden. "Wow! That means that it'll be easy to find a girlfriend, right?"

Lin Zhu laughed and said, "Getting yourself a girlfriend all depends on your skill but since it's on a first-come, first-served basis, we have the advantage here. In fact, we actually have more boys this year than the previous year. Last year's ratio was one to five!"

Sun Xiaodong looked very happy. "Haha, this is good news! I don't have to worry about finding a girlfriend anymore!"

Lin Zhu immediately poured cold water on him. "Don't be too happy though. It's true that the English department has a lot of girls but the engineering department only has a few girls. Therefore, those monks in the engineering department will naturally look at the other departments that has the most number of girls, especially those with the pretty ones. It's not going to be easy at all."

Sun Xiaodong seemed to be extraordinarily optimistic and was not discouraged at all. "I'll use my fiery heart and strong arms to conquer my goddess!"

As the three people respectively described their unique reasons, they became even closer to each other.

Today was the first day so there were no classes. Their classes would start tomorrow morning. The three people went back to the dormitory and continued unpacking their things. Then, they each did their own things.

Sun Xiaodong could not stay still in the dormitory. He grabbed a new basketball and went out. Lin Zhu was playing computer games while Qin Yang was reading a book on the bed.

At about four o'clock in the afternoon, the door suddenly opened. A tall, handsome young man appeared at the door. His hair was neatly groomed. He wore a short-sleeved blue T-shirt, casual pants, and leather shoes with a shiny watch on his wrist.

"Hi guys, looks like everyone's here. Am I the last one?"

Qin Yang put down his book and looked at the young man at the door. He replied with a smile, "Yeah, everyone's just waiting for you."

The young man dragged the suitcase into the room and smiled as he said, "I had a visitor at my home at noon so I came late. Bros, I'd like to invite you all to dinner this evening and let's get to know each other."

Lin Zhu smiled and said, "Are you from Zhonghai?"

"Yeah, it just took me half an hour to drive here from my house. By the way, my name is He Tianfeng. What are your names?"

Qin Yang and Lin Zhu introduced themselves. As they were talking, Sun Xiaodong came back. sweating while holding on to his basketball. When he saw He Tianfeng, he immediately smiled and said, "Hey there, looks like everyone in our dormitory is here. My name is Sun Xiaodong, I'm from Dongbei."

He Tianfeng waved his hands and said, "Although we're now classmates and roommates, all of you came from other cities which makes me the host. So for tonight, we'll have dinner at Haifeng Restaurant and I'll invite some of our beautiful classmates. Let's all have some fun tonight!"

As soon as they heard that there would be beautiful girls, Sun Xiaodong, Lin Zhu, and Qin Yang's eyes lit up. Sun Xiaodong curiously asked, "It's just the beginning of the semester. Where are you going to find these 'beautiful classmates'?"

He Tianfeng had a proud expression on his face as he replied, "Do you know why I chose Zhonghai University's English department? Because there are so many beautiful girls here! And also because the school so special that I can showcase my ability here as the 'Nightclub Prince'. Hey, I've been here several times during the summer holiday and I happen to know a lot of beautiful girls..."
