Freedom and failure

I knew that if that elevator came back, full of guys I was as good as dead. I armed myself with everything I could find on the cleaners. I got 2 hand guns off them, 3 clean knives, some meal replacements and a card that said Roman Everett on it. I stuffed the card im my pocket and scarfed down the energy bars, I felt like I haven't eaten in forever. And as bad as this tasted it was exactly what I needed right now, besides trying to escape that is.

After I was done a scent drifted towards my nose, it was an earthy smell, like how it smells before it rains and I could also make out the smell of flowers. What is that smell, I entered the Incinerator and saw a gigantic furnace sitting against the wall. As I got closer to the furnace, the earthy smell grew even stronger. This was the smell of nature but how is this possible, I am 100% sure that I am a under ground, so where is that coming from I thought to myself. The smell got more intense as I entered the furnace, I looked straight up and saw an opening. This was the chimney for the furnace to expel the smoke. The opening was barely visible but it was there, I clearly had my work cut out for me. I was a few stories underground and I had to climb this vertical brick wall.

-35mins later

A bloody and blistered hand crept out of the top of the chimney. The rest of me followed covered from head to toe in soot. The effect of the adrenaline still has not worn off yet but my aching body was commanding me to stop. I needed to rest, but this wasn't the place I was still behind enemy lines. I was in the heart of one of Prometheus's settlements. So escaping right now was out of the question. The best I could do is hide until I was healed and try to escape at that point.

I looked around and there was a lush green forest ahead of me. I made my journey from the base, I was walking for 20 minutes before I reached a river. I was tired and dying from thirst, as I leaned over to drink some water I noticed how bloody my hands were and not only that but my clothes was also covered in -----. Just like that the adrenaline wore off and I collapsed into the river once again flung into darkness.

.....

[Back to Prometheus base]

The head scientist for the Aeacus project was sitting behind his desk with a glass in his hand, he drained its contents. He reached over too a bottle of liquor and poured himself another. He was devastated, he invested so much in this project and most of his results were mediocre at best and this last project of his that he invested so much time and resources had spectacularly failed. He sighed and emptied the glass once again.

Suddenly his door swung open. Two broad men wearing black suits entered the room. "Please report to interrogation room 1" they spoke in unison. These guys were more criminals used as muscle in the organization. These guys were the same as the clean up crew, except they worked more closely with the council. And they were not as heavily armed, having only a 9mm pistol and knife strapped to thier waist.

The head scientist's name is Kyle Regor. He runs the Aeacus division which had the sole purpose of creating super soldiers to combat their nightmarish world. A couple of his projects had succeeded in producing powerful soldiers but they were as dumb as sheep and would sometimes attack themselves and other bio-soldiers.

They lacked common sense and any shred of survival instinct. So even though they were strong and fast they rarely survived even one battle. He got up and made his way to the interrogation room, locking his office behind him and heading up to the higher floors.

It was a small 12 by 12 room with a metal table and chair in the center. Dr. Regor entered the room and took a seat. In front of him was a file jacket with the word Kadmus written across it in black. He opened the file jacket and saw picture and notes from his past subjects as well as detail documentation of the individual expirament.

The pictures inside the jacket were horrid filled with grotesque humanoid creatures. Their faces were mangled and they were horribly disfigured, the later expirament pictures were more humanoid but they still had extra limbs and other defects.

The doctor sighed remorseful as he browsed his earlier experiments.

After each and every one of these experiments he convinced himself he was getting closer to perfection but that was a lie and he knew it.

The expirament started to look less monstrous after he altered the formula but that didn't matter much, they were all the same intelligence lever. And then there was his last set of projects which he had lost all hope with, the last 57 was like a chore and he just added whatever the hell he felt like to the formula, changing it without recording the changes. The division was getting shut down and he didn't care about success or results anymore, he just wanted it to be over.

This care free attitude led to him adding all sort of chemicals and field sample together and use this as the formula. His later expirament didn't even have pictures because he was just tired of failure after failure after even more failure. He sat there contemplating where it all when wrong.

"Doctor Regor, according to what you told us this Kadmus project had provided nothing but failures and abominations, is this true" asked a womans voice broke the silence, it came from the speaker mounted on the wall. Doctor Regor was confused, he didnt understand why they were pointing out his failure.

"Well, yes that is true they were all failures but I still believe it was worth it, just for all the knowledge we gained through the process and my subject though they are not viable in the field, they worked as excellent training dummies for the Ares division. These failures still made the organization strong, even if just by a little" responded the doctor.

"No, you seem to be mistaken. We aren't criticizing the effectiveness of your creations, we want to know if you have been hiding the results of your test and/or lying to the council and this organization" replied the womans voice.

"What are you talking about, I disclosed every aspect of my expirament with the council and I kept you informed every step of the way" replied the doctor, angry at the fact that the council was even proposing that he was working against them.

"Well fair enough we should not be doubting your loyalties since you have been here since day one but according to you, your project Kadmus was never successful" said the womans voice.

"Yes that's right, the project was never able to make a super soldier and my subpar creations were incinerated or sent to Ares for combat training " replied the doctor.

"Well please Dr. Regor, explain this" said the woman as a projection beamed against the wall. It was a video feed from the incineration room.
