I awoke to the ringing of an alarm in my ears. It took me a minute to remember what it was for, then I realized.
I turn twenty today.
August 4th, 2020.
I rolled over, pulling myself from bed.
I quickly changed into a comfortable flannel and jeans. Today was one of the only days we didn't have to wear gear. I wasn't hunting today, I would spend the entire day checking to see if I was ready to become a parent.
Since I was really little, I always knew I would grow up this way and need to do this, but I never thought I'd be quite so excited. I strolled through the different sections, and finally made it to the nymphs. They were in charge of everything surrounding the children.
Once I got to the bottom of the tree in the center of their quarter, I knocked. A nymph poked her head out, looking me up and down.
"Name?" She asked quizzically.
"Kaida." I answered looking around. My palms were sweating, and I wasn't really sure why.
"Okay. You can wait next to Ferren. He will be the male sperm donation."
The trunk opened, showing a colorful room made for children with colors and drawings lining the walls. There was a hallway at the back, leading to many different rooms that looked like hospital rooms.
I scurried over to the seats in the middle of the room and sat on the only one that wasn't taken.
I watched a child run from the hallway, with a fairy chasing after it, both laughing. Pregnancy worked different here, we didn't have to wait nine months for the baby. The fairies magic could speed it up.
"Kaida and Ferren, please go to room number 3," A speaker sounded.
I stood, looking for Ferren. A brown-haired guy with bright green eyes stood as well. He had a nice build, and looked nimble.
I followed him into room 3, where a bed layed in the middle of the room with a chair next to it. A small nymph with beautiful eyes stared at us as we walked in.
That was the one thing I was jealous about from the fairies. They had beautiful eyes, and I'd always hoped they would pair me up with a fairy and the baby would have his eyes.
"Kaida, please lay in the bed. We just have to check a few things before we can get started."
I obeyed, crawling into the bed. Ferren was in the corner, as the nymph focused. The nymphs could check to see if there would be any health issues, if I had a child. I was sure I didn't but it was procedure.
The nymph looked confused, then turned and left the room. Me and Ferren both followed her with our eyes, confusion crossing our faces.
"Does that normally happen?" I asked, placing my hands in my lap.
"No. I'm not quite sure what that was about," He answered, curiosity peeking him.
The nymph returned minutes later, my file in her hands. She studied it, then looked back to me.
"Is there any possibility your file could have left something out?" She asked carefully.
I thought for a moment, "Well, I'm not sure. There is probably a possibility." I paused, "What's the problem?"
"Well," She looked to Ferren, then me. "Kaida, I'm sorry, you can't have kids."
Confusion blinded me, "Huh? Is that even possible?"
"Yes, but normally it gets charted in your file. I'm sorry Hun,"
Ferren was dead silent, then he spoke, "Are they going to kill her off?"
My mind raced. Normally when you are female you live until your child is a teenager, or until you're thirty if that comes first.
"Well not yet, but she probably only has a year. They don't have much use for her, and they have to many kids growing to fast in dragoness, without rooms who need to start training."
They talked about me like I wasn't even there. I sat up, still very shocked.
"I-I'm going to go," I said shakily, standing from the bed.
"Okay, Hun. We'll tell you your fate once we consult some others," She said behind me, but I was already out the door.
I hurried down the concrete, running back to my room. Tears slid down my face. I saw Amaya, who called my name, but I kept running. I ran past roll call, where people looked and stared at me. It wouldn't be soon before word spread and I would have people checking up on me. I made a split second decision and ran past the house. I continued running, through the gates into the woods. I heard Amaya and others telling me not to go, but I ignored them.
This could be my last day alive. I wasn't going to listen to them. The people who would murder me because I have no purpose now.
