The blockade didn't last. The second we walked into that room, they were ready. Firing down the first person they saw. We lost one, then two. Amounting to more and more people the farther we walked. Quickly I learned the blockade wouldn't work. I had a sword strapped to my back and a gun in my hand. It was sturdy and sent an aftershock through me after I fired a bullet into someone's arm. I saw them flail back, then hit the ground after I let another clip at their side. Each sides were losing many, but the had more than us. We were outnumbered, I guessed, by at least five. I shot towards another one, weaving around. They could tell by our blockade who to aim for, so I wasn't getting shot as often.
I felt a tug at my side, it was Amaya. I turned to her, ignoring the bullets aiming for me.
"Kaida!" Amaya screeched. My reflexes were quick, and I scurried to the sound, just getting nicked by the bullet.
As I looked around at our numbers, my hope fell. There wasn't enough people, and I was the only one alive who wasn't supposed to make it to the portal. I had to protect them.
Someone came charging towards me after ditching their gun, the ammo empty. I couldn't move quick enough this time and they went barreling at me, the force of their body knocked me to the ground, as they fumbled with their sword on top of me. I heard Amaya scream, and swiveled my head over. Someone had her by her shirt, sending a punch to her face. I looked to everyone else, they were all busy. We were losing. Everyone was dying. I saw two demons hop into the portal, of course. They abandoned when we were losing. Typical. At least someone made it. I took a deep breath and shoved as hard as I could, knocking the person off me long enough to reach my sword off my back. They recovered quickly, but so did I . I swung the sword, cutting their head clean off. The ground was soaked with blood, dead bodies silently laying over rows of seats.
I immediately searched for Amaya. I couldn't see her anywhere. I couldn't see Ferren either, in fact it was just me. Among the dead bodies. They couldn't have made it out. I turned, looking to the portal.
A face stared back at me. Well, many faces were there, but only one looked straight to me. I readied, and guarded myself.
"We have a proposition," A voice rang clear, "We keep you all, as our slaves, and you can watch us take over Earth, the very thing you failed to protect."
A mocking laugh came out of his mouth, his face cracked and scarred. They nudged Ferren with the end of a sword. Leaving a red stain on his shirt when they removed. They had each of the people I was supposed to protect lined up in a row. A gun to the first head. It was Amaya's.
"You come over here silently, I won't blow your friends head off," He said grimly.
I dropped my hands, a plan brewing in my mind. I looked to Amaya, she stared to me. I stared back at her, not letting her eyes go as I moved, further to him. I could see the look in Ferren's eye as I moved, he was disappointed, and struggling not to yell out to me. The ground was cracked from the bloodshed and force it had taken today.
"Drop the weapons," He ordered me.
I slowly and carefully placed the sword on the ground, and removed the knife I had stashed in my show. I removed the gun from my hand, and went even slower. The portal fizzed, as if it were running out. It probably was. This was taking too long.
I swiftly cradled the gun and pointed it high above my head, thrusting my finger down hard on the trigger. It rang through the church, and for a moment everything was still. Then it hit the man who was speaking right in the head. Chaos broke. Amaya and the others, including me, sprinted to the portal. I shot at multiple others, as did everyone else. Two giants hoped through the portal. Then the Dragoness did, Amaya waited for the slightest moment to say,
"I better see you on the other side."
I nodded to her, practically shoving her into the portal. The first fairy got in, then Ferren came next to me.
"Come on!" He said holding his hand out to me as he stood infront of the portal. Each of the attackers were on the ground, injured atleast.
I took one last look around the room.
A loud bang erupted, sending force into my lower abdomen. I hit the ground. I looked down to see a rapidly increasing red stain come across my body. Ferren saw it all just as the portal whooshed him away. Tears were stricken on his face, but he couldn't get me before he got back. But he was safe.
The church left in ruin, blood staining anything it could. Bodies scattered across the floor.
I closed my eyes, my vision turning spotty.
I dreamt of the little red house on the corner with the big porch. I dreamt of sitting on the porch watching my grandchildren play in the yard, with Ferren by my side. I dreamt of the life I'd always craved.
And I let Death take me.
Take me home.
