50,000 years ago, Hell was destroyed because of too much Foul from the resentment of the souls that later turned to Soul Eaters and devoured everything in their wake, leaving nothing of Hell. The gods above in Heaven, in order to take care of the newly-died souls, created the Afterlife Department comprised of grim reapers. 

Huo Ling was delivering food that day when he met Yi Bing and the guy gave him a warning. When he arrived to the customer's unit, he was killed.

Lu Si and Jonathan Baurne watched in the monitor the different television channels reporting the preparation for Huo Ling's birthday feast. The newscasters were granted a special pass to enter the royal palace. But, during the day, they are limited to the wide garden of the palace. They can only enter the main palace at night, when the birthday feast is about to start.

On the screen, the head butler of the royal palace can be seen as he personally inspects by the door the chefs and other workers needed for the preparation for tonight's celebration.
