50,000 years ago, Hell was destroyed because of too much Foul from the resentment of the souls that later turned to Soul Eaters and devoured everything in their wake, leaving nothing of Hell. The gods above in Heaven, in order to take care of the newly-died souls, created the Afterlife Department comprised of grim reapers. 

Huo Ling was delivering food that day when he met Yi Bing and the guy gave him a warning. When he arrived to the customer's unit, he was killed.  
Huo Ling: you set up a death flag for me!
Yi Bing: I'm a grim reaper. I'm the flag myself. Let me help you solve the mystery of your death.

"'c – cultivation'…" Mo Shi muttered in surprise.

"The yao has disappeared together with the cultivation world, and the Hell collapsed." Yi Bing spoke. "Now, there are only us, grim reapers, the angels, the gods, the souls… and then the Soul Eaters." He said. "The Soul Eaters can be considered as yao." He told him.

Mo Shi's mouth fell open in shock. "So, that is why the Soul Eaters have a humanoid form!" he exclaimed. "Because they want to imitate the humans!" he looked at the two Soul Eaters that were beaten by Huo Ling and Jin Wu.

"En." Yi Bing nodded in affirmation. "Not to mention that the humans have the largest population among all the beings existing, the humans also have intelligence." He spoke. "No matter how powerful one being is, it can be defeated by intelligence." He looked at Mo Shi.

Mo Shi understood. "Strategy!" he exclaimed.
