Suprises

"Hey, Janie. Will you let me in? It's pouring down rain here."

My breath caught in my throat, as she opened the door. Her long red hair was wet and hanging down her back, she had a towel in one hand and was wrapped in another. I never imagined she would look so beautiful and innocent standing there. All I wanted to do was grab her in my arms. The sound of her voice brought me back.

"umm, Sam what are you doing here? I am glad you are here. I'm sorry to impose on you again, but I am not sure how to get back to the hospital. I didn't know how to reach you. Could you show me?"

I stood there like a true dumbass. All I could do was nod my head. She looked amazing and she had no idea about how she looked.

" Yeah. I figured you could use a ride back. Since you aren't familiar with this town. Are you hungry? We can get you something to eat. Or coffee. Or a coke." I was rambling like an idiot still.

" Actually coffee sounds good. I didn't think to bring anything with me, is there somewhere I can grab a tooth brush and paste at least? Let me dress real quick and we can go."

" Sure, there is a drugstore around the corner and then a coffee shop. "

I watched her go back into the bathroom. What happened to the lost kid from this morning? Did she disappear and leave behind this gorgeous woman? Is that what happened? It's the Twilight Zone and I am in the wrong room.

Janie came out a few minutes later. Grabbed her purse and with the most crystal blue eyes that I have ever seen looked into mine and said, "Are you ready?" .

We drove to the drugstore and she went in. I stayed in the car with my thoughts. This is not me. She is not my type. I'm too old for her. I will take her for coffee and the hospital and I will not see her again.

We sat down in the coffee shop. I ordered black coffee and she ordered a little coffee with her cream and sugar. The silence while we waited was awkward. I was usually a smooth talker but couldn't start a conversation.

" So where are you from Janie?"

" A town on the Outer Banks, Buxton. It's where the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located. "

" We go up to Kitty hawk sometimes."

" That is an hour away from me. "

By then the coffee came and we sat a few minutes in silence. That pretty face, seemed lost in thought and a million miles away. She returned to being sad again.

"Janie, I'm sorry your going through this. I really am. Did you get ahold of the Red Cross?"

"Thank you, Sam. I did. I talked to my Uncle Jimmy. He will coming home, I hope. I really should go. I need to be there when he wakes up. I need to figure out when to go home to grab things, or just buy some stuff here. "

" Come on kid, lets get you to the hospital. Maybe he is awake and feeling better. Then you will feel better too."

I paid for our coffee and got her one to go. She was gonna need it. We just listened to the radio on the drive to the hospital. I was at war with myself and what to do. Soon we arrived at the hospital, I felt panic suddenly hit me.

"Janie, its really not a good area here after dark. How about I come back at 8 o'clock when visiting hours are over and you can follow me to the motel? "

She bit her bottom lip as she was thinking about what to do. My heart was pounding. Maybe she thought I was being a stalker. Shit!

" I guess that would be fine. I appreciate the help. My car is the Plymouth over there. The purple one. I will meet you there at 8 o'clock. Thank you. "

I watched her walk into the lobby, for tbe second time in 24 hours. What was I thinking?
