Chris saw the walls closing in and he thought he was suddenly in a SAW trap, but Sarah and Bethany were not reacting.
[Maybe this is a normal thing?] He thought, but he really wasn't sure about it.
The walls started to shine and fold onto themselves as the reality seemed to bend and cause a rainbow effect to shine through the hallway. Then the group was in another room that had a small bed with a series of bookshelves.
Chris was looking at the very matte gray shade on the walls…it was very boring. But there were various designs coating the door, wait, the designs were also coating the inside of the little bunker. Chris could just barely make out an infinite alphabet of strange runes, they were never repeating as far as Chris could tell.
As Chris was studying the walls, Sarah handed the piece of leather to Bethany who began to read it.
"Standard..wait. Blessing of…huh.." She said as she looked over at Chris who was seemingly goofing off in her eyes. Then she kept reading the Curse and Trait sections. "So…ah…that is going to be a problem, but he could be like Alfred the Mankiller…" She was mumbling under her breath as she was thinking through the meaning of his "bonuses" and then she got to the Trait. "What? That doesn't make a lick'a~ sense." She walked over to a large brown book. It seemed to be ancient as the pages were yellowed beyond repair, even the writing could barely be made out.
The little gnome lady ran her finger down the pages as she flipped through, she was hoping to find a reference to Chris' [Wildcard] trait. It was very strange; it had no clear definition even in the status screen itself. Usually the traits would come with a quantifiable bonus or negative impact, but this was very different.
The gnome was looking around but found nothing. She was sure the guild would have had at least a mentioning of something this strange. The Church and the Guild are meant to share details about the Heroes so they can help guide the Heroes once they are done training within the Churches.
The actual status screen of the Heroes would be kept secret, but the general workings and the direction of the class would be very important for future success. People in this world were always complaining about autonomy over their builds but they always end up with wasted potential.
When a Hero generation is going to be summoned to the world, the Guild will usually compile a large amount of Guide prospects, but only one will get the job for each Hero and they are applied according to the wishes of the Elders. The "Top-Brass" of the guild.
Bethany was in that competition 104 years ago, she had memorized every known build combination, but her creativity was lacking to become a Guide, or that is what the Elders said.
Chris was still studying as she was flipping through the book; she knew she wasn't going to find anything useful because she had the book memorized. She would have recognized it immediately. But this really did not make any sense, how will a non-Hero have a blessing that even the MANY generations of Heroes have? It is an impossible thing.
"Sarah, I do not have record of the [Wildcard] Trait." Said Bethany as she placed her book down on the table.
Sarah looked surprised, this lady is her "go to bookworm" or "was", back in the day, but this ability definitely came from the Gods. She said, "Beth, I think I have a general idea of his ability. I believe I have seen it used, but I need your help to confirm."
…
…
…
Bethany nodded as Sarah shouted at Chris, "Kid! Stop messing around, come over here and help us with something!"
Chris looked over and saw the pair behind a table. It was a nice wooden table but the chair was a small stool, it was kind of rough to sit on for a "BIG" person like a dwarf…but either way, he sat down and looked at them.
"Okay? What is going on?" Chris looked at Bethany pulling out something that seemed like a clear orb. The gnome just held it in her hands, this object was meant to detect enemies of the user but right now there seemed to be none.
Sarah spoke up, "Chris, I want you to get angry at her." She pointed at Bethany as she spoke, and Chris got a strange look on his face.
"Uh? Why would I do that?"
"Please, just try to feel mad about ANYTHING and place it on her, you have something that should upset you…" She trailed off but he knew she was alluding to his death that happened to come to this world.
Chris thought, [This is weird, why would I need to think about this?] but he shook his head and tried to do it. The dwarf was thinking about those moments on the rooftop, the trickery that happened to him AND Chad…he was also a victim. If the Boss didn't get so fuckin' greedy then none of this would have happened.
[I could be at home, watching anything.. This is all Tony's fault. FUCK TONY! That fucking bastard Snake…I BAKED COOKIES FOR HIM!] Chris slammed the table and directed his pain and anger at Bethany's general direction.
The orb in her hands suddenly became red and then shifted to black in color. This meant that someone was your active Enemy. This is the equivalent of war being declared between two people. It would usually only happen when a commoner watches his wife or daughter be…assaulted…by a noble. Thoughts that cloud the humanity in a person. Black can be seen when an actual monster is nearby as well because the monsters are Enemies of the sentient races.
Sarah and Bethany were both freaking out. "Sarah! What is going on? Is this your theory?" and Sarah nodded at her before saying, "He has the ability to shift alignment at will! I thought he was just emotional, but this is more akin to an ability, look at how the rage is gone!" She pointed to Chris who was now cooling down from a rampage like state almost instantly.
Bethany was pulling out a piece of paper and was recording the experiment for the record. This was a new Boon that was discovered outside of the Hero-cycle, this has never happened before! She will have to report this to the higher-up, she is going to go down in history, but more importantly, she is going to expand the knowledge of the Sentient Races. This is a gift from the Gods.
After writing down the process, she looked up at a confused Chris. Sarah was waiting to test the opposite. The gnome put away the Enemy orb and brough out the Ally orb. This would be used to ensure that betrayal did not occur between the people. If the orb changed then it would mean that one of the participants had altered thoughts, and that would narrow it down greatly.
"Okay, can you try to think about someone that you love, just like before, I need you to concentra-" Sarah was cut off when the orb turned bright blue. This is the color of an Ally, someone that has no intention of doing harm to you.
Chris had his eyes closed and he was thinking deeply about something, [I miss you so much mom…] as a tear silently ran down Chris' cheek. He was feeling a little more emotional after thinking about his death and he missed his mother so VERY much.
Sarah and Bethany knew the look of grief.
