I got chased and then saw something frightening and confusing in Portland last year
but this was the worst after my scary boss. Last year I worked at a fancy hotel in downtown Portland (Pearl area) but lived in St. John's across the river. There's no free parking in the Pearl and we didn't have an employee lot. We got public transportation passes and had to take the bus or train to work. It was about a 15 minute walk to my bus stop so sometimes when I was running really late for work I'd drive over to the stop and leave my car in the neighborhood across the street from a mortuary.
I got off work pretty late one night and the bus dropped me off at about midnight. I was always on high alert when taking public transportation so I had already made a note of the huge man sitting in the very back of the bus. He must have been over 6'4", probably in his 50s or 60s and wearing this huge neon orange jacket with a big hat pulled down. Of course he got off at my stop behind me. I started walking to my car and got the most uneasy feeling that he was purposely following me. I always got creeped out during this walk to my car because of the mortuary so I tried to tell myself I was just getting spooked over nothing.
I couldn't shake the feeling so I started walking a little faster. His pace immediately matched mine. I slowed and so did he. The uniform for my job was a tight pencil skirt and very restrictive shoes so I tried to speed-walk to my car but I wasn't getting very far. My car was about 200 ft away when I finally decided to turn around and look at him. When I looked back I nearly puked, he had the most intent focused expression. It was clear he was coming after me. Fight or flight finally kicked in and I took off sprinting despite my stuffy work clothes.
I dove into my car and locked all the doors. It was a really old janky car and there was a weird anti theft feature where you couldn't turn the key into the ignition until you waited for the car to make a beeping sound, then you had to press the unlock button on the remote clicker a few times. Then you could finally turn the key. I had to wait a minute before I could drive off. I sat there panting and shaking as he got closer to my car (he didn't run, he just kept walking) and as he passed it seemed like in slow motion he stared through my window locking eyes with me and not turning his head to look in front of him. I completely froze with fear.
This part is hard to explain because it happened super fast. But basically, my car was parked on the right side of the road and that was the side I'd been walking down. To the right there were houses lined up and there was a woman leaning on the fence of the house just right ahead of my car. She was looking at her phone and appeared to be waiting for an uber. As soon as this man passed me and couldn't turn his head to stare at me any longer, not even 2 seconds later, he walked up to this woman and proceeded to just walk straight into her, pinning her to the fence. He took out his phone and made the flash go off a bunch of times, holding it right into her face while still pinning her. He wasn't taking a picture, I don't know what it was. It was just the lights. As soon as he did that he tossed her to the side and then just kept walking down the street as if nothing had happened. This all went down in less than 10 seconds.
She was so terrified that before I could even ask if she was okay she ran straight back into the house she'd come out of. I finally got my car on and went driving the way he came so that I could at least get a better description of him. When I caught up to him he was just beginning to turn a corner and I got too scared to follow him that way. I called 911 and told the operator what I'd just seen. She honestly sounded a bit annoyed when I answered that no one had been hurt and she said they'd send someone down to check it out but I never heard about it again.
I spent the night with my then-BF because I was too scared to go home alone. I started driving to a different bus stop and I was always really afraid I'd run into him again. To this day I have no idea what I even saw really but I had the worst feeling that whatever that was was meant for me. Truly one of the most bizarre and confusing things I've ever seen.
