Chapter 64: Year

My focus traveled to the scenery outside the window. It was so beautiful around their property. The grass was a fresh bright green and there was plenty of space to run around free and roll in the grass. My wolf wanted to jump out of the moving vehicle and run alongside it, to feel the blades of grass beneath my paws. A lazy nap in the sun after a good chase sounded like absolute heaven.

Logan's voice ended the silence in the truck abruptly, "Now, since I've told you my age, will you indulge my curiosity with yours?". I swallowed at his words, thinking of what to say next. After a long pause, I asked, "What year is it?". He looked at me in disbelief before quickly schooling his features as if he had not a care in the world. I saw his emotions show through even if only for the quickest of moments though. I had shocked him with my question. So much for trying as much as possible to be that normal girl...

Logan answered, "June 2020". June 2020... 2020... it had been a long time.... I had escaped when I was 17 back in late 2016. I had spent almost four long years running as a lone Wolf. I would have turned 21 years old in April, just a few short months ago. Tears were threatening to burn my eyes at my wasted childhood. I pushed it all back down and focused on the road ahead. My voice sounded almost mechanical as I said, "21".

I could feel Logan looking at me, but I could not turn to face him right now. If he showed any sadness or disbelief in his eyes I don't think the tears would be manageable any longer. I felt his large warm hand touch my thigh. His thumb rubbed lightly on my skin. I placed my hand on top of his and squeezed lightly. He was giving me the support I needed without any words again. He was such a good man.

The rest of the ride we sat in silence, hand in hand, just enjoying each other's presence and watching the trees go by and by. He lent me his perfect strength and I took it happily. As the trees became scarcer and scarcer and the buildings became many, my excitement arose. I would finally get to see the city! This was a much needed distraction!
