"It's my fault." Luna whimpered so quietly Solar barely heard. She lifted her head and looked straight into Solar's eyes with the most horrific look on a pup's face he ever saw.
"Fa." Luna choked out.
"Yes."
"Ma is gone and it's all my fault!" Luna began to cry, wailing to the moon that had rose in the sky ahead.
"It's not YOUR fault!" Solar stared in dismay at his grieving daughter, "You had no way of knowing what would happen once you left the den. Sirus was only trying to protect if course but she should've told you everything! But it's not her fault for being protective, it's MY fault! Sirus wanted to wait for the next breeding season but I was eager to have pups of my own."
"I didn't take history seriously and now I've gotten myself exiled, your mother lost or killed, and worst of all, you'll never know a normal life, just one that's at constant risk in the wild." Solar wailed like a lost pup, looking for its ma. All he wanted at that moment was his ma, she always knew just what to say whenever he needed help.
"It's okay fa. I would've been a lot worse if you hadn't saved me from that lake." Luna padded to Solar's side, "And look! Is that your den?"
"It's OUR den now. Besides it's only temporary. I know where Sirus would've gone if she's still alive, and I know she's still alive. We'll go to her old pack in the mountains to find her. Once we do, we'll head south, far enough that no mountain lions will ever find us." Solar's vision of the future was as clear as the past.
"That sounds perfect! Do you really think ma will be in the mountains!? I can't wait to see her again and show her everything you'll teach me on the way!" Luna nudged Solar's foreleg affectionately and he winced.
"What's wrong?"Luna gasped' "Are you hurt?"
"It's nothing, I just landed on my leg funny when I was stalking a doe earlier. It got away." Solar stared bitterly at his foreleg, hurt for nothing. He wondered again how he missed, he'd never missed before.
"It's ok. Ma said nobody's perfect."
Solar padded to the den with Luna close behind. He pushed through the vines and circled around his mossy nest with Luna in the middle. He layed down with his tail fur tickling his nose, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
