The clouds cold tears eventually turned to snow as Solar drew further north. He listened intently though made sure to look where he was going this time. He thought he heard the small sound of a pup's paws but wasn't sure since their was no bigger wolf bounds with it. He thought it could be a squirrel and kept going. Eventually he burst into a clearing and had his breathe snatched away by the sight.
A beautiful frozen lake stretched out for miles in front of him with the Suns light reflecting off the thin icy covering on top. A faint line of snowy mountains trailed the far edge. Solar's paws wouldn't move, he was transfixed by the beauty of it all.
CAW! CAW!
A hawk flew overhead and called solar back to reality with it's High pitched warning call. Solar shook his head and nearly began running again when suddenly a small black mass spun out over the ice. He paid little attention at first but not for long.
"MA!" It squeaked, "HELP!". It was a cub. His cub.
He fought his way forward through the thick tangles of cattail and cringed as he heard the skittering sound of nails on ice. He wanted to call out but didn't want to frighten her and cause her to fall in when he was too tangled in weeds to save her. He whimpered at her cries for help, feeling completely helpless.
One. Last. Thrust. CRASH! He was through, just in time to see the ice crack.
SPLASH!
"LUNA!" Solar wailed before leaping head first into the freezing water. Solar had never swam in anything deeper than the creek that ran through camp when he was just a cub himself. But his short panick attack was short lived as instinct kicked in and he thrashed and paddled his way towards his daughter. He made it to the hole and took a long deep breathe before launching himself underwater.
Solar felt his hole body stiffen and knew he had to find Luna fast before they both joined the goddess as stars by her side. Solar opened his bright amber eyes that stung from the intense cold to stare into the the dark depths of the lake. He prayed for his daughter as he tried to keep his lungs from exploding.
He nearly drown after a minute of searching before he saw a heavy lump of fur at the bottom. He launched himself to the surface to gasp for air before diving down deep to grab Luna in his jaws. Once he had her he made a break for shore where he pounced on her chest repeatedly to get her to breathe.
Her body convulsed suddenly and she coughed up more water than her own body weight. Then she lie limp on the ground, passed out. Solar feared he had failed until he saw the slight rise and fall of her chest. She was breathing just cold and exhausted.
Solar let out a sigh of relief but knew he wasn't out of the ball park yet. She could still pass from the cold so Solar shook out his soaked pelt and pushed her close to his belly. He covered her with his thick tail and licked her fur the wrong way. When the sun nearly reached it's peak Solar drifted off to sleep, wondering what happened to Sirus.
