The Break-In (3)

The following car was quickly gaining on me, and I eased my foot off the throttle just enough to give me time to get my bearings.

There was an intersection coming up, and one of the roads opposite to the one I'd always take to the city, led to an off-road country drive that would reconnect with the road to the city at a much further point. It was a shortcut I'd taken a few times and was inclined to take now.

I slowed down some more as I neared the intersection, glancing up at the approaching vehicle in the rear view.

"Please, please, please, let this work..."

Whoever was driving seemed to be speeding up.

'This could either go very right or very wrong.'

Sucking on my teeth, I grabbed the steering wheel with both hands and prepared for the big break.

Almost there.

Almost...

Almost...

The car was close enough for me to squint against the glare of its headlights against my side mirrors.

Almost...
