Lai Yiteng wandered for quite some time after leaving his farming village. He kept looking back on the road, hoping for his parents to come running after him, but they never did. Even though both of their eyes had been shining with tears.
His feet were growing tired and numb, but he didn't want to stop walking. Lai Yiteng followed the winding pathway for the whole afternoon. His body had been undernourished for too long, so traveling a far distance wasn't easy. He walked past brown and barren fields, devoid of life. He saw crows feed on the dead bodies of livestock.
He was too afraid to stop and rest.
If he stopped, he wasn't sure if he could keep going anymore. The only guidance he had was his father's explanation of how to get to the nearest town.
