Chapter 38

Leigh walked into their home with Jim and looked around. The company the insurance people had hired did a good job. She couldn't see any sign of the damage from the horde of children. That didn't stop her from imagining the pool of blood where Marie had lain on the floor, but she pulled her eyes away. She put her bag with knitting and clothes from Fran's down in the hall.

"Looks like they did OK," she said to Jim. He just nodded and sat at the table.

"Sorry, still feeling a bit stiff." He flexed his right hand and winced. There'd been some frostbite on that hand.

"I'll make coffee," Leigh went through the kitchen until she found where the contractors had put the filters. The children had trashed everything and Leigh told the contractors to just stuff things in the cupboards for now. She found a couple of mugs that hadn't been broken.
