Chapter 48

Jim drove around the mall building to the detachment door. He and Marie walked into the detachment where Georgia was talking to Carol.

"Hi, Jim." Carol waved him over. "You'll want to hear this."

"Ok, Georgia." Jim leaned on a desk. "Take it from the beginning,"

"Ryley came looking for his mug." Georgia spoke in the tones of a kid whose been asked one too many times to repeat her story.

"His mug?" Marie turned away from the coffee machine.

"Mrs. Dalrymple bought him a special mug. It was why he behaved himself. I tried to help him with his reading and stuff. He liked to hang around me. He never really talked to me, but he was always watching."

"Sounds creepy." Marie stirred coffee whitener in, then looked at it and set the mug aside.

"Not really." Georgia shrugged. "He just had a problem with words. He couldn't think of what to say, so he'd punch some kid instead of talking to them. I helped him with words, so he liked being around me in case he needed to talk. I didn't mind."
