Chapter 28: The Lovers

Marriette threw herself into the life of the school. She met all the students and agreed to the stronger security arrangements. Daniel had brought Joan to the school protesting all the while. Only Marriette's obvious need for her friend convinced Joan that she should stay. When Daniel had returned the next night with the horrible news Master Candler and one of Arthur's friends had been slaughtered by an enraged gang of young nobles, Joan had fallen to the floor wailing in grief. To Marriette's self-disgust, her friend's agony was the remedy for Marriette's own uncertainty.
