Three days after the visitation from the angel, Marriette stood with the king as he shrugged his pack into position again.
"I am not the king," he said, "I am just one more penitent making a pilgrimage."
"I wish you would be the king," Marriette said, "I don't know I am ready for this."
"Think of all that you can do in my absence."
"I do," she said, "and that's what terrifies me."
"Listen to your advisors, but follow your heart," the king said. "You must rule until I have done my penance and have made myself right with God."
"It still seems like a very hard thing, to send you halfway across the world."
"I made a very bad mistake, I, and my country need time to heal. Take good care of our people."
"It will be a long journey."
"It will." The king reached out for his queen's hand. "With my queen at my side, I will be fine."
"Goodbye, then, Majesties, and God speed."
"Thank you, my child."
