Chapter 60: Five Of Cups

"I am very glad to be Marriette leBraun again." Marriette put her hand to her temples. "The crown fit very uncomfortably on this head."

"It is supposed to be uncomfortable." Harald said. "I must get used to it again, but not too used. I learned much on my travels."

"So, where do we go from here? We can't go back: two Houses giving in to treachery, peasants being sold into slavery to pay their debt."

"Not to mention the people are no longer cowed by the Houses," Torrance leaned back. "Once they realized they had defeated a Legion, our small forces hold no fear for them."

"People shouldn't be ruled by fear." Sarandia put her hand in Harald's. "Fear can become hate very quickly."

"The poor Emperor." Marriette shook her head and grinned. "I almost felt sorry for him."

"We can't let up," Harald said. "He will be a terrible enemy when he decides his defeat was our fault. Taking Belandria will be a point of pride for him."
