Calliope works for her explorer father as an artist, recording what he brings back from his journeys in her sketchbooks. When she’s given a chance to go along on a trip to capture a sea serpent she doesn’t hesitate.

Life at sea isn't what she expected, and she ends up fascinated by the engine room of the steamship HMRV Peregrine. A tragedy makes her assistant engineer, but Pentam, her father’s protégé, is even more determined than her father to make Cal a fine lady. That means protecting her from danger, even if it drives her crazy.
When science and legend collide, Cal is the one who must take up the challenge of survival, even if it means risking her new-found feelings for Pentam.

Calliope

A month after the rescue, the royal coach came to collect Cal. She wore a gown Beth helped her put on. None of her uniform clothing was in a fit state to visit royalty. Cal touched the Zithayan's scroll in her sleeve. She'd ask the prince for advice.


An honour guard met her at the entry to the palace and marched with her to a large room with the Queen seated on a dais at the end. The Crown Prince sat beside her.


The guards walked Cal close to Her Majesty. When they stopped, Cal went to her knee.


"Our son has told me of your adventures. A flying ship, a mid-air rescue, fire and treachery. If it weren't him, We would wonder if it was the plot of a penny dreadful."


"It has been a busy time." Cal studiously kept her eyes on the floor in front of her.


Her Majesty laughed and a murmur went through the room making Cal aware a crowd surrounded her.


"Is there something you wish of Us in return for your service?"
