Chapter 21: Everyone Dies Someday, Part 1

Pranthi put her camera bag on and walked up the ramp and hit the button to open the door. She liked her bank. One of the old, classically designed banks, it echoed with marble. Security cameras fought with cherubs and fat bankers for space along the ceiling. The teller knew Pranthi and chatted as she went about processing the check without expecting a response.

The first Pranthi knew of the bank robbery was the gun poking over her shoulder and shooting the teller. Red blossomed on the woman's chest as she lay on the carpet on the other side of the counter. Other shots made it through her ringing ears as rough hands pushed her to the floor. No alarm sounded other than the shrieks of the customers. From her viewpoint on the floor, Pranthi watched a man break out through the doors and run onto the street. One of the robbers casually pulled open the door and fired a few shots. Screams came from outside the bank now.
