Chapter 24: One-Legged Cop, Part 2

"Medics are on their way," she said as she put pressure on the bleeding cop's wound. Dan went to the cruiser and popped the trunk to get the first aid kit.

"You should be sitting down," the woman officer said. "Even if you didn't feel it, I saw you get hit at least once in the leg and once on the vest."

"Yeah," Dan pulled out a field dressing and handed it to her. "I'll have a bruise in the morning."

"People bleed out from leg wounds," she said.

Dan looked down at his legs. There were two bullet holes through his pant leg. He started laughing, and thumped his leg.

"Fake leg," he said, "I'm glad they didn't shoot the good one."

They huddled by the car until the ambulance arrived. The medics lifted the injured cop onto a stretcher and were away again. More cruisers arrived.

"We need to check the building for victims," the sergeant said and started detailing who would go where.

"Wait," Dan said.

The sergeant wasn't someone he knew.
