Chapter 24: The Thing In The Hall

"Back!" Wolf shouted and bounded up onto the block of cement. He was almost fast enough. Mark wasn't close to the water and leapt backwards as soon as he heard Wolf. Igor stood right on the verge peering at something further along the shore. His head came up when Wolf called, but he didn't move. In that second, a monster lunged from the depths and snapped its jaws tight on Igor's arm. He had a second to yell, then the monster pulled him into the water.

Wolf jumped down and ran to the water's edge. Mark soared past him in a dive with his knife already out. Wolf wondered how he knew he'd hit the monster, not Igor. The swamp erupted into roiling water as the monster surfaced. Mark's knife was buried deep in the creature's side. It thrashed and roared, but Wolf couldn't see either Mark or Igor.
