"Gwythin," Wolf said, "we're under attack. The Things are back in force. Get everyone out. Use the tunnels. Don't look back. Warn the Weeds and the Duns."
"Here's your sword," she said as she held it to him.
"Give it to Liam," Wolf said, "tell him it's time."
She pushed the tears away from her face and ran out of the room. He heard her calling the alarm. Even in peace the people knew what to do. They only needed minutes to empty all the buildings and get to safety. Wolf peered through the window again. The beast floated over the building to his right and he saw Things dropping from a hole in its belly. It was up to Wolf to buy his people those minutes.
He reached beneath his gear and found the Thing's other weapon. After the fight in the Hall, no one had thought to look for it. Days afterward, Mark had given it to Wolf and made him promise to keep it secret. Holding the rod, Wolf ran toward the stairs and battle.
