"Easy," Bart said. "Now I'm going to have a serious talk with your parents, so I need to put you somewhere safe."
"Please don't put me in the closet, mister. I'm scared of the dark." Sherry did a credible job of the scared kid, but Bart laughed.
"I'll bet that's where Daddy keeps his shotgun." He smacked Sherry on the head. "I've read Br'er Rabbit too. Don't get any ideas, kid. We're faster and stronger than your Daddy, even before he blew himself up along with half the swamp." He pushed her against a wall next to one of the men with a shotgun.
I had to restrain Bubba again. If it were just us, I would have attacked and died fighting this monster. But Sherry was there, and I couldn't chance her getting hurt. I'd seen too many gun battles where all the wrong people got shot.
Bart pushed us to the other side of the room. He kicked Bubba's knee and sent him to the floor. He gripped my hair and put the gun against my head.
