Chapter 114: Heroes of the Past (Part 1)

Cyaxares gave Justin a moment to absorb her words.

"Unfortunately," said Cyaxares, "our present problems stem from the heroes of the past. Not your father, in this case, but the Brethren. In the beginning, the Brethren were devoted to the peaceful study of the spirit. In your father's time, we became warriors out of necessity, but in the following ages, Amphidemus's belief that aurym and daemyn could coexist led to increasingly... radical practices. Aurym was, and is, the natural life force of the world. The Brethren believed that daemyn was just as natural. I, however-having seen the way the demons worshipped daemyn, and the effects daemyn had on your father-began to question the concept. Daemyn seemed far too unnatural to be of this world. It felt more like a perversion of the organic. A disease. A blight upon nature. Then, twenty-five hundred years after Benjamin Holmes saved the Oikoumene, an ambitious young man named Avagad was initiated into our ranks."
