Chapter 21

Sleep eluded Odo, his mind in a state of turmoil, anxiety and angst. It would be the last time he would call this house, home. This was where he'd grown and lived his entire life. His mother gave birth to him in the very bed where he now lay and years later she died in it - as did his father. Perhaps this wasn't the estate of a wealthy merchant or nobleman, but it was home and held memories that were dear and important to him. It was to be the home of Charlotte and their children - his family. But no more. The house and fifteen acres of land, his cows, and even his dignity now belonged to Lord Mellester; it was all his.

With his stomach tied in knots, he eased himself from his bed. It was time to endure the humiliation of the pillory. Soon the night would turn to grey and he was expected to present himself in the village square and submit to the lord's will.
