Chapter 43

Reeve Petrus walked to the remains of the fire and eased himself down on a log. He scratched at his beard.

"This isn't good, Petrus," said one of the sergeants.

The reeve made eye contact with the sergeant and nodded in agreement.

Both sergeants kept looking nervously beyond the campsite and into the trees.

Odo couldn't keep quiet any longer. "What is it, what did ye see?"

Reeve Petrus pointed to the corpse. "He wasn't killed by an outlaw; he was killed by a knight. Three knights were here, Odo. They killed him, and took Charlotte on one of the hackneys."

"Then she lives!" exclaimed Odo. "Then we can go and find her, follow the tracks."

Petrus held up his hand. "Odo, Odo, knights are involved. We cannot go searching for knights. Even if we were lucky enough to find them, we would likely be killed if it came to a skirmish."

"But we can't leave Charlotte! We have to do something."

Reeve Petrus took a big breath. "I am going to do something, Odo."
