Chapter 69

Showing no outward sign of the fear she felt, Charlotte carefully approached the frightened stallion and spoke calmly and slowly. His ears twitched at the familiar sound of her voice. Cautiously she undid the gate latch, pushed it open and quickly stood back. With no hesitation, the panicked courser charged out of the byre, the sound of his hooves lost to the roar of the blaze. Next she released Sally who lumbered out, following Amica to safety. Now that the animals were out of harm's way, she could finally turn her attention back to Odo.

Thick smoke billowed into the byre, and flames, fed by the draught from the open door, continued to leap up the walls devouring everything in its path. Ignoring minor burns from glowing embers, ash and flaming remains that fell on them like a deadly rain, Seth and Reeve Petrus, coughing and hacking from smoke inhalation, half stumbled, carried and dragged Odo from the wreckage that had once been Odo and Charlotte's modest home.
