Chapter 22

Sophie felt a heavy weight pressing down on her chest, obstructing her breath.

”It’s the medical police,” Lukas said, puzzled. ”But how...?”

“Have you talked to anyone?” Sophie interrupted him.

“No I... of course not,” he protested.

He looked, sincere but...

“Not even with your dear friend, Officer Meyer?”

Emma seemed confused: “Who is Officer Meyer?”

“A family friend, nothing else! I haven’t said anything!” Lukas insisted.

”Who else could know?” Emma said sharply.

Feverishly, Sophie began looking for a way out. The police was still on the ground floor and they were on the twenty-sixth: if they managed to get out before the cops arrived...

It felt like oxygen could not reach her lungs, and every breath was painful.

”We need to get out of here,” she wheezed.

Lukas sounded desperate: “Where should we go?”

“You can stay here. Emma,“ she said, turning to the old lady, “Let’s get going.”
