Chapter 29

The room seemed empty, except for a table with a display of rubber gloves, syringes, scalpels, and other standard medical equipment. One side of the room was made primarily of a glass wall that extended from about one meter above the floor almost to the ceiling, with a small, battered-looking computer monitor in front of it. Sophie noticed a large refrigerator in the corner, and guessed that the blood was stored there.

It had to be a rather impressive reserve, and if anyone felt nervous about so much infected blood nearby she certainly couldn’t blame them.

But to her surprise, Edmund approached the window and lit another light. The room on the other side of the glass became illuminated. Sophie got closer and finally realized what Edmund meant.

It was a very small room, little more than a cubicle containing a bed, monitors and other equipment for the surveillance of vital functions.
