Chapter 36

They were greeted by an elderly lady, around Emma’s age, Sophie guessed, but there the resemblance ended. Unlike her friend, whose innate sweetness Sophie learned to appreciate, the woman in front of her had a hard, scrutinizing look.

”Is she here?” she finally asked James.

James didn’t have time to answer, because Emma appeared on the threshold and stared at Sophie.

”Sophie, is it really you?”

“Yes, that's me under all these layers!” Sophie smiled, although her face was invisible. She also realized for the first time that her voice sounded muffled. She was happy to see that Emma seemed fine, although her friend did look slightly lost.

The woman with the stern look ushered her into the house, which was arranged more or less like James’. Emma led Sophie into the room where she had stayed during the last two days, and there they could speak alone for a while.
