Chapter 40

Sophie did not know what to say, so as soon as she could she got out of the house and walked into the meadows within the island. The air was, if not exactly hot, pleasantly warm, at least in the sun; she took off her mask and gloves, and after a while she proceeded to let go of her anorak. She was still wearing a sweatshirt underneath, made of anti-infection synthetic material, so she felt relatively safe.

While she walked she reflected on James’ words. All in all, she thought, she could have a look at that material. What did she have to lose? If she didn’t manage to get any results, no one could blame her.

On the other hand, she was afraid that this could delay her return to normal life even further. To tell the truth, in a mere few days so many things had happened to her, that she was beginning to wonder if it would be so easy to just go back to her old life.

She would need new documents and a new job. It would be odd to think of herself under another name.
