Chapter 52

Sophie felt Cain's brow with a gloved hand, noticing that his temperature had lowered: he was sweaty, but his face was not flushed as before.

She began to clean up the room, washing away the blood and sterilising the instruments she had used. Then she made tea with a kettle that she kept in the next room, and drank it slowly. Finally she allowed herself to curiously observe her patient for a long time. Cain was lying on the stretcher: he was still wearing shoes and trousers, but his chest was uncovered except for the bandages that she had just applied.
