Chapter 26

Expecting Something More

On my way back to my room, I overheard my father talking to Billy in his quarters. No, I wasn't sneaking a listen. The door was wide open. I didn't need my super hearing to make out what he was saying, either. Not that he was talking to Billy. More like he was talking to the tech next to him who logged observations on a chart.

"Disappointing," Dad said. "No manifestation to speak of. Strength seems to be at parallel with the first subject, invincibility a bonus. But I had high hopes for some other surprises here." He shrugged his shoulders and turned to the tech who stared at him, eyes wide behind her glasses. She got it, if my father didn't. "I guess you can't win them all."
