Being super doesn't come with a training manual.

No.3 plucked me out of my wheelchair and securely strapped me into a three point harness before I could even think to fight, not that I could have struggled much. He ignored me and left me there, carrying my folded chair out with him. I gaped, unable to breathe or think, watching him exit and approach a white-coated man who turned when No.3 spoke to him.

I knew that scientist. "Dad!"

He glanced at me and I felt a shudder of cold drive through my stomach. It was like he didn't see me at all.

We took a side corridor hidden by a decorative panel. Not so impressive, I told myself. Just your standard bad guy hideout secret passageway. Big deal.


I felt the hum of the beam before I spotted the others crowded against the back of the hall. It was more of a big, empty room with emitters focused toward the far wall, forming a natural barrier across the front. One of the suits hit a button on his cuff and a doorway opened in the energy curtain. I was forced at weapon-point into the cell area and felt Billy stumble into my back just as the beam hummed back to life. I spun to face the black suits, but they were already leaving. Only one remained near the exit and he refused to glance our way.


I turned to see Elle, Andre and Tosh all rushing toward me.


"Are you okay?" Elle's hands gripped my arm. Her palms were warm, almost hot, cheeks flushed.
