Chapter 66: Seshat

We sat in the shade of a flowering bush further into the Menagerie while a pair of chattering monkey-like creatures watched us with their inquisitive faces scrunched in concentration.

"Ra," I said, prompting Seshat who settled next to me with her tablet and pen in her lap. "Is he the reason you left Egypt?"

She nodded, staring at her hands as she twiddled the pen back and forth. Her shoulders rounded forward, grief and frustration obvious as she spoke.

"It's been horrible in the Pantheon for a long time," she said. "Since the mortals stopped worshipping us. But Ra, he kept us going. Always sunny and shining. But he's been retreating more and more. And I know why." She wiped at a tear that fell with the cuff of her shirt sleeve. "He's been using his own power to support the realm. To keep it alive and vibrant for the rest of us." She blinked and smiled through tears. "He's amazing."

I nodded. "We've met. I like him a lot."

She seemed to soften at that. "Is he...?"
