Chapter 39: Down But Not Out

0600 hours on the Phoenix

Chief Zamora, head of damage control on the Phoenix, surveyed the work on the forward laser cannons Battery C. Damage control on a starship was more cleanup and fine tuning than heavy lifting and hard work. The maintenance drones and repair bots did most of the work, like a body's autoimmune system they covered every inch of the ship inside and out fixing all that needed to be fixed. That is not to say the DC team did little. Each DC tech was responsible for fire suppression and the manual operations of any system that failed, especially any energy system.

Zamora was an old space dog who had been a DC in the days before repair bots and never trusted their work. Despite the machines 99% efficiency record, he still preferred to do some of the work himself and required his crew to triple check every critical repair.

"Chief," Specialist Johnson called out as he came up behind Zamora with a large metallic box with ripped up wires coming out of it.
