Seventeen-year-old Fresco Conte is an ordinary All-American kid from an upper middle-class family. He plays football. His girlfriend is a cheerleader. Life is good. Until unexplained things, scary things, start to take him over. Like surviving an accident that should have killed him. Or hearing the thoughts of the people around him whether he wants to or not.
 
When the men in the dark blue coveralls come for him, Fresco is forced into addiction to the blue joy known as Wasteland and set free on the street, with no answers and only his hunger to keep him company.

Fresco's new life was a well-structured and orderly circumstance. He ate with the others, delicious food prepared by amazing chefs and served to them by their own staff. He was encouraged to take self-defense and strength training classes with any of the others who had time or were willing to help him. And when his team needed him, Fresco accompanied them in the dark blue van out into the streets of the city to tend to the flock of special children.


Meritas loved calling them that. His flock. It conjured up happy images of fluffy sheep and meadows and made Fresco smile


The real surprise came when Meritas revealed the crowning piece of his master plan to Fresco in his quiet and beautiful penthouse sanctuary.


"It's finally time," he said, "to start the next evolution. To take what you have become and combine it with our first generation. Imagine the power and control of such a progeny, Fresco!"
