I must have looked ridiculous sitting there with my mouth open and my forehead scrunched as I processed what he said. I'd trusted Alice, believed in her. No way I'd misread her or her need for answers. Um-hum, all my history of having great instincts about people argued otherwise while a jolt of hurt she might have been lying to me cut deeper than it should have.
Okay, time to be honest with myself. Was I defending her because I liked her, or because I thought she was innocent despite evidence that suggested the contrary? Evidence I myself discovered? It was clear Alice targeted Sadie, and now I knew why.
But was she working with Sadie still? Or, had she been following the woman around as some kind of fraud of her own devising? Setting herself up as this big debunker to get views on her blog? Could all of her success be tied to a lie set up and perpetuated by the old woman, using Alice's blog influence in some convoluted plan the two con artists used to bilk customers?
