Chapter 404: Disgrace

Gretchen didn't seem nearly as surprised to see us as she would have if she'd been innocent. How telling was that? Heaps, in my books. Instead of arrogant disdain or even outright shock we'd returned, she stood slowly, as though a great weight rested on her shoulders and she struggled against it. She stopped when finally upright, watching from behind her desk while Jill grimly nodded.

"Dr. Latrell," she said, "you know why we're here?"

The facility manager just sighed, as much a proclamation of guilt as any sound I'd ever heard. "I admit it," she said, suddenly appearing harried and tired. Keeping a murder a secret was a giant load to bear, I guess. "I knew you'd catch me eventually. So yes, I know why you're here."

Wow, that was easy. "You admit to murdering Melina Canty?" I usually had to push the guilty into almost killing me in turn before they confessed. Maybe this cop thing was to my benefit after all.
