Chapter 29: Power Hungry

More mourning, another funeral pyre, this one tiny and pathetic. Winnifreth was not in attendance at my insistence, despite Mahalia's attempt to convince her mother otherwise, some kind of closure nonsense I knew had more to do with amusing the evil woman than helping Winnie.

Anyone could tell just from speaking to the poor girl her mind shattered completely with the loss of Lavender. Ernest's death began the decline and her baby daughter's death finished the job. I started out with good intentions, visiting her every day in her home where Lilibeth had her moved after Lavender's funeral so she would at least have familiar surroundings. But it was just too difficult when she touched her stomach and asked where her baby was. Too painful to repeat the same lie, how Ernest had her, they were out together, didn't she remember?
