Chapter 43: Choices

I wasn't prepared for an attack, not believing he'd really go that far. But thanks to the shield I had up already, the power he threw at me merely exploded against the wards.

I have no idea what the outcome of our little battle would have been, though with the power of the Hayle witches behind me, I'm fairly confident I could have kicked his behind all the way back to his despicable family. But neither of us had the opportunity to find out.

Not with Miriam running toward us, calling my name. My name, not her father's, a fact registering on his face as a flicker of rage. Miriam stopped at my side, magic pulsing in panic, as she scooped me up and hugged me to her, turning her body sideways to protect me from her father, who she gazed up at with so much hurt even Ivan relented.

"Father," she said, so near to tears her voice shook, "what are you doing?"
