I felt pressure building, even through calling my own fire. But this pressure came from outside me, from my right, leaking in under the sturdy steel and wooden door guarding the exit. I only had one moment to understand what that pressure meant, to turn and shout, "Down!" to Jack and Samuel, before said solid door burst inward, shattering into countless shards and splinters, the force of the implosion powerful enough to drive me to the ground.
I was buffeted by heated air, looking up in fear to see Jack hovering over me, his body a shield between the destruction and my still human flesh. I saw him jerk, as though struck with something heavy, but his expression of grim determination did not alter.
My eyes traveled over the small entry as the blue flames died, a cloud of smoke mixed with stone dust billowing around me. Bodies in black velvet lay strewn about, all of them still. Those remaining on their feet turned and fled, Hugh screaming after them.
