Chapter 75: Steam Union

The Steam Union fled through the night with me among them. If it weren't for the amazing constitution the living metal gave me, I knew I'd be bruised black and blue from the ordeal. But the gold protected me, or my physical form at least, while my heart churned with fury.

I'd wrangled my anger back, welcoming the familiar comfort of it. This was a time my temper served me for once. The heat of it actually cleared my head, helped me focus and pay attention, though I was in no condition magically to track the route we took.

I was thrown onto the back of a horse, held upright by the rider while the rest of the sorcerers mounted as well. Robert paused next to me, gloved hands sliding the medallion's chain from my neck. The feeling of utter loss was sharp and immediate and almost drove me from the drugged state that held me. He shoved the golden disk into his pocket, dulling the connection as he turned away, driving me back into my helpless state.
