Chapter 249: History Rewritten

Home. I sat on the bench in the back yard, staring into the darkness as night descended, layering deeper and deeper filters of gray over me while the girls whispered their grief to each other. Better not to feel, not right now. Maybe later. I had eternity, didn't I? To process and work things out. Surely I deserved a little bit of relief no matter what I had to do to get it.

Betrayal I'd not been allowed my final battle, my ride into light and death with my drach mount beneath me, felt like the Universe itself had let me down. The dream, the precog glimpse of the future, felt like a slap to my face, to my commitment to Creator and Fate.

His fat cat body landed in my lap, purr starting the instant his feet touched down, but I blocked the power behind it, smothered the caring and kindness he tried to share. The rumble stopped after a few seconds as he gave up and sighed.
