I almost protested him leaving me, but he just waved, pausing long enough to kiss Trill on the cheek before he and Ameline ascended the stone steps, out of sight.
Silence fell, though the pounding of my heart filled the space well enough it seemed.
"I only have a little time left," Trill said. "And I'm finally able to talk about it. So ask."
I laughed, couldn't help myself. "Was it worth it?"
She seemed surprised by that question, before she tossed her dark hair back, eyes glittering with good humor and acceptance. "Was it, Syd?"
"Of course," I said.
She smiled.
"It's not over." I hadn't meant to say that, but it came out anyway. Blurted from deep within me while the girls held still. They'd been quiet, all three, since Max's death and this was the first time I'd caught them interested in the world outside.
Trill sighed, still smiling. "It will never be over," she said. "Until it is."
Right. "The Wild Hunt?"
