"Why, hello, Grounds Keeper," the Master's daughter said. "This is the Cathedral, the centre of our faith. Here God is entreated night and day to have mercy on his creatures and guide us in what we should do." She gave a predatory smile. "I know what I am being guided to do." She crooked a finger at him and Daniel found his legs lifting him up and carrying him toward her. She took his hand in hers and pulled him toward the side of the Cathedral.
"The Arch-Bishop is dead!" someone shouted from a balcony high above the crowd. "He was poisoned! The Choosers have murdered God's man!"
There was a wail from the gathered crowd and the man who was speaking stumbled momentarily. The Master's daughter looked away for a moment and the compulsion on Daniel weakened. He wrenched himself away from her and went running out of the Cathedral. He was followed by a stream of people who cried out that Choosers were among them. The city was doomed!
