Chapter 35

Thorndon

Lieutenant Best screamed at the soldiers, his voice cutting through the ambient noise and normal activity of the Thorndon docks. In response to his curt command, the soldiers of the 80th regiment eventually lined up and snapped loosely to attention. Best quickly strode down the first line of soldiers, his face sneering at the disgraceful turnout. Some men became seasick and spent nearly the entire journey retching over the side as the Integrity sailed to Wellington from Auckland. Only recently arrived and disembarked; it was no excuse for slovenly behaviour, thought Best. He was unimpressed and made a mental note of the offending characters. Once they returned to Auckland he would devote some much needed time on the regiment's discipline. A subtle cough from behind reminded him of the reason they had assembled.

With a crisp about-face, Lieutenant Best marched towards the New Zealand Colonial Secretary and informed him all were present and accounted for.
